Karen Mathis
The work of contemporary painter Karen Mathis focuses on the light quality affecting objects at all times of the day. Her impressionist style, which characterises her unique painterly aesthetic, is applied in both oil and watercolour paints. Of her process, Karen states “I like to experiment both with colour and the enlargement of shapes to explore the subject matter. How many subtle colour differentiations might I use to lend impact to the subject while portraying atmosphere and light at different times of the day? Secondarily, how small an area can I enlarge and still maintain the integrity and appeal of the subject matter?”
She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
With 30 years of experience exhibiting her work both locally and internationally, Karen has won numerous awards and has been published in titles including 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic (2014), Schiffer Publishing. Additional titles include The Collected Best of Watercolor (2002) and The Best of Watercolor: Vol. 3, (1999), Rockport Publishers, to name only a few.
She currently resides in Sarasota, Florida and welcomes collaboration with local and international clients and collectors.
