Nicole Roquel

Hong Kong-based illustrator, Nicole Roquel, creates artwork drawn from the emotional rawness of her personal experiences - often depicted through bright neon colours, innocent-looking characters and surrealist-like compositions. The whimsical quality of her work started from a childhood interest with naturist fairytales. Reaching adolescence saw her enticement for juxtapositions inspired by the narratives of the Brothers Grimm and Tim Burton, where the grittiness of human nature is conveyed through nostalgic and even childlike circumstances.

In 2017, Nicole graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration. Some of her popular works were featured in her first solo showcase in the same year titled Blue, where she illustrated a narrative of an anxiety-stricken relationship. In 2018, her series titled Polvoron was exhibited to showcase her personal perspective of a third culture upbringing.

She has developed a range of clothing and homeware available via her online shop, and her freelance clients include Sony Music Asia.
