Mariola Quirland Medina
Mariola is an artist, illustrator and printmaker, born in 1992 in Santiago, Chile.
Mariola studied at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile, where she earned her degree in fine arts specialising in printmaking. After university, she took courses in comic and manga drawing and began her artistic research into illustration.
Mariola grew up reading fantastic literature and watching both Western and East Asian animation. Her work is as such strongly influenced with classic fairy tale illustrations, mythological beasts and supernatural beings, as well as the world of Japanese illustration and bestiary.
The material nature and colour are factors of great importance in Mariola’s artwork. She prefers traditional media because of the richness of the technique: the body, intensity and texture in the pigments of watercolour, gouache and ink.
“I want to talk about dreams and become a storyteller. My artwork talks essentially of my own childhood experience, a world of monsters, wonderful beasts, animals and magic. A solitary girl that enters this world rupturing the veil to fantasy. I hope my work and aesthetic lead me to illustrate books for children and young adults as well as concept art and animation projects.”
