Wanying Jin
With a focus on portraiture, Chinese artist Wanying Jin aspires in her art to explore the contemporary connotations of elegance while conjuring unorthodox figures that challenge our notions of gender, race, and identity. In doing so, Jin creates a space in which her characters can be seen as both their own figures and as tropes based on real people, the viewer of her work might know and love. Rather than making up these characters, Jin sees her job as simply bringing them to our dimension through her mixed media preferences for oils, coloured pencils, pastels, and collage.
Based in Beijing, Jin received her MA degree in illustration from Manchester Metropolitan University, in Manchester, England. She also holds a BA degree in illustration from the Arts University of Bournemouth in Poole, England. Recent showcases of her work include those at the Manchester School of Art MA Show (2017), and at MarcDeck Gallery in Ohio, United States (2018).
