Sergio Córdova
Chile-based illustrator and graphic designer Sergio Córdova (aka Sergei Cordov) explores identity and meaning through texture, line, and shading, using a mixture of analogue and digital procedures to create highly symbolic, dream-like scenes and portraits.
“I like to think of my illustrations as detailed and polished field notes. I don’t create in a linear way. I observe and register, and most of the time, it feels like shapes, elements and characters appear as clues to a story that I don’t necessarily understand yet. So then I just put the pieces together, watching the process of what needs to be conveyed unfold, behind layers of symbols and metaphors. I connect the dots and witness how the previously unknown significance of what needs to be told unveils itself.”
Inspired by insects and animals depicted in old illustrated encyclopedias, he began expressing himself through drawing at a very early age. Later, his style evolved by influences of comic-book artists such as Simon Bisley and Sam Kieth, and the illustrations of Dave Mckean and H. R. Giger. He received his artistic training via art classes and also graduated with a degree in graphic design at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. Today he works as an illustrator, brand designer and art director for advertising agencies and design studios in Santiago de Chile. He’s worked as a freelance designer in multiple and diverse cultural and entrepreneurial projects and also as a brand designer, incorporating illustration as a means to create visual identity and storytelling.
Sergio has been invited to showcase his work at festivals and events such as -ING Creative Festival in Dubai, Lollapalooza Chile and Behance Portfolio Reviews Santiago.
