Mara Torres León
The work of contemporary abstract painter Mara Torres León explores human conflict, the resulting hardships and the lessons, if any, learned. She questions how, as humans, we can learn to be resilient and have strength in the face of adversity.
Initially training under Spanish painter Pilar Sebastiá and the revered Puerto Rican painter, Andrés Bueso, Mara took a brief hiatus from painting, electing to study architecture at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (New York). After graduating and working as an architect, Mara felt an internal conflict, realising that her true passion was painting and redirected the trajectory of her career to become a full-time abstract painter.
Referring to her process as “thoughtful abstraction”, Mara considers every stain, line, stroke and mark with immense care. Architectural and perspective underdrawings form the structural foundation of her work. A mix of transparent media, including oil and acrylic paints, pencils, inks, aerosol paint, gold leaf and coffee, are applied energetically, giving her work a distinct sense of movement and fluidity.
Mara is actively exhibiting her work and has recently participated in Art Basel Miami. She works with both private
and international collectors and is available for commission upon request.
